What's different about Smart Lock here
West of the 5, older wood doors near the ocean swell and shrink noticeably through the year. A strike set to a hairline fit in September will bind in February. I allow for seasonal movement when adjusting, which is the difference between a lock that works year-round and one that's fine until it isn't. Salt exposure also affects exterior hardware finish over time on west-facing doors.
For the many renters here connected to Camp Pendleton, the important point is that a smart deadbolt is a modification to the landlord's door — it uses the existing bore, but it's still a change, and most leases want that agreed in advance. The good news is it's fully reversible: I'll keep your original deadbolt, fit it back when you leave, and the door is exactly as it was. If your lease doesn't allow it, a keypad lockbox is a much less satisfying answer but an honest one, and I'll say so rather than talking you into something that costs you a deposit.
Before you book, from Oceanside
If you rent — and a lot of Oceanside does — check your lease before buying. A smart lock uses the existing bore and is fully reversible, and I'll keep your original deadbolt for you to reinstate when you leave, but most leases want changes to exterior door hardware agreed in advance. Get that in writing and it's a simple job. If you own and you're near the water, expect seasonal movement in a wood door, which is why I set the strike with room rather than to a perfect fit.

It's the longest drive on my list, so I batch Oceanside with Carlsbad and Encinitas and run North County as a day. That means fewer available slots but a real arrival time when you get one. Coast Highway is slow in summer; I schedule around it.

Will it fit my door?
Most standard doors, yes. Text me a photo of the current deadbolt from both sides and I'll confirm before you buy anything. Thick doors and unusual backsets are the two things that catch people out.
What if my door doesn't close properly now?
Then a smart lock will make it worse, not better. I can usually adjust the strike plate as part of the install. If the door itself has dropped or the frame has shifted, I'll tell you what's actually wrong.
Can you install one on a glass or sliding door?
No — those need a different kind of hardware. Standard deadbolt replacements on hinged doors are what I do here.

Smart lock installation in Oceanside
Oceanside's rental share makes the smart lock question a landlord question surprisingly often. If you rent, most keypad deadbolts swap onto the existing bolt with no new holes and revert perfectly at move-out, which is usually enough for a landlord to agree to — worth asking before assuming not. If you own and let the place while deployed or travelling, the useful feature is scheduled codes you can issue and revoke remotely rather than anything on the lock itself. Either way, check the door closes cleanly under its own weight first, because no lock will fix a door that needs pulling.
