What if I don't have a C wire?
Very common in older San Diego homes. Most current thermostats ship with an adapter for exactly this, and fitting it is part of the job. Send me a photo of your existing thermostat with the cover off and I'll tell you what you're working with.
Do you work on the furnace or AC itself?
No. Thermostat replacement is low-voltage fixture work on existing wiring. Anything involving the equipment itself — changeouts, refrigerant, gas — needs a licensed HVAC pro, and I'll point you to one.
Will it work with my system?
Check the manufacturer's compatibility tool before you buy, and send me a photo of your current wiring. Between the two we'll know before I drive out.

The honest thing about smart thermostat installation in San Diego is that the payback case is weaker here than the marketing suggests. A lot of homes across the coastal strip barely run heat and have no air conditioning at all, and a Nest saving you thirty percent of very little is still very little. Where it genuinely pays is inland — El Cajon, Santee, Escondido, Poway — where summer afternoons run twenty degrees hotter than the coast and the AC does real work between June and October.
The wiring question decides the job. A thermostat needs a common wire for constant power, and San Diego housing stock is split: post-2000 builds in Carmel Valley and Eastlake almost always have one, while 1960s and 1970s systems frequently do not. I check what is behind your existing plate before touching anything, and if the wire is not there I will tell you what your options are rather than improvising something that browns out your furnace board.
