In the pre-war core — North Park, South Park, Normal Heights — there's usually transformer-fed doorbell wiring at the door, but it can be old, it can be undersized for a video unit, and the chime box is sometimes in a hallway ceiling nobody has opened in forty years. I check the transformer voltage before assuming a wired install will work, because a doorbell that reboots itself every time someone rings it is worse than no doorbell.
Clairemont, Bay Park and Mira Mesa generally have healthy modern wiring and are a straightforward swap. Downtown and Little Italy condos usually have no doorbell wiring at all and often an intercom instead — for those the battery model on a no-drill mount is the honest answer, and I'll tell you that before you buy the wired one. Front doors in the older neighbourhoods are also frequently set back in a deep porch, which affects the angle far more than people expect; a wedge bracket is often the difference between covering the walkway and covering a wall.

Before you buy, send me a photo of your current doorbell button and, if you can find it, the chime box inside. Between those two I can usually tell whether a wired unit will work. If you're in a pre-war house and the button is an original push with cloth-covered wire behind it, plan on the transformer needing attention. If you're in a downtown condo, check whether the building uses an intercom system — if it does, a battery doorbell on your own door is the only thing that will work.

What if I don't have existing doorbell wiring?
Then the battery version is your answer, and I'll mount and set that up instead. Running new wiring to a door that never had a doorbell isn't work I take on — text me a photo of the door frame and I'll tell you which situation you're in.
Will my indoor chime still ring?
If you have a standard mechanical chime, usually yes, and I test it before leaving. Some models need a small adapter at the chime box — if yours does, I'll fit it.
Do you set up the app?
Yes. Pairing, WiFi, and motion zones are part of the job. I'd rather spend ten extra minutes getting the alerts right than have you turn them off next week because they fire every time a car passes.
