What's different about Smart Lock here
In the 1920s and 1930s bungalows of North Park, South Park and Kensington, original solid wood doors have often moved. Ninety years of settling, a few coats of paint, and coastal humidity mean the bolt frequently doesn't throw cleanly into the strike any more. That's the single biggest cause of smart lock failure: the motor fights the misalignment, the batteries die in weeks, and people blame the lock. Adjusting the strike plate so the bolt throws freely is part of every install I do, and in these houses it's the part that matters.
Older doors also often have non-standard backsets and thicknesses, which is worth checking before you buy rather than after. Clairemont, Bay Park and Mira Mesa doors are conventional and generally a clean swap. Downtown condos are usually fine mechanically but sometimes have building rules about unit door hardware, and a few have a fire rating on the door that you don't want to compromise — worth a quick check with your HOA.
Before you book, from San Diego
Before you buy, do this: close your front door and lock the deadbolt with the door shut. If you have to lift, push, or pull the door to get the bolt across, a smart lock will struggle where your wrist doesn't, and I'll need to adjust the strike as part of the install. Then photograph the deadbolt from inside and out, and measure the door's thickness at the edge. Those three things tell me whether what you're looking at will actually fit.

Parking is the variable that actually affects my schedule here. North Park, Hillcrest, and Ocean Beach are permit or metered street parking, and downtown buildings need a loading dock booking or a visitor spot arranged ahead. Tell me when you book and I'll build the time in rather than being late.

Will it fit my door?
Most standard doors, yes. Text me a photo of the current deadbolt from both sides and I'll confirm before you buy anything. Thick doors and unusual backsets are the two things that catch people out.
What if my door doesn't close properly now?
Then a smart lock will make it worse, not better. I can usually adjust the strike plate as part of the install. If the door itself has dropped or the frame has shifted, I'll tell you what's actually wrong.
Can you install one on a glass or sliding door?
No — those need a different kind of hardware. Standard deadbolt replacements on hinged doors are what I do here.

Smart lock installation in San Diego
The thing that decides a San Diego smart lock job is what is on the door now. Post-war and newer homes across the city have a standard deadbolt with a standard backset, and the swap is genuinely twenty minutes. The pre-war central neighborhoods are where it gets interesting: original hardware, occasionally a mortise lock rather than a cylindrical deadbolt, and door thicknesses that were never standardised. A mortise lock is not something a retail smart deadbolt replaces, and finding that out on the day helps nobody. Send a photo of the existing lock from both sides of the door and I will tell you what fits before you buy anything.
