Encinitas specifics

What's different about Smart Lock here

The most common thing I find on an Encinitas smart lock job is a door that doesn't close quite right and hasn't for years. People stop noticing a door they have to lift slightly or push to latch. A smart lock notices immediately: the motor is doing the work your wrist used to do, and it can't compensate. Adjusting the strike, and sometimes the hinges, so the bolt throws with no resistance is what makes the difference between a lock that lasts on one set of batteries and one that doesn't.

Coastal Leucadia and Cardiff add seasonal movement — wood doors near the ocean swell in the damp months, so I set clearances with room for that rather than to a perfect fit on the day. Where a home has been extended, the front door is occasionally a reclaimed or custom one with an unusual thickness or backset; both are fine, both are worth confirming from a photo before you buy anything.

Before you book, from Encinitas

The test that matters in Encinitas: shut the door and throw the bolt. If it catches, drags, or needs the door held in a particular position, that needs sorting before a motor is asked to do it. Tell me what you find — adjusting the strike is part of the job, and knowing in advance means I allow the time. In a remodelled cottage also measure the door thickness, because reclaimed and custom doors turn up here more than anywhere else on my list.

Getting to you

Coast Highway 101 through Leucadia and Cardiff backs up badly on summer weekends and on any decent surf day. I schedule Encinitas jobs earlier in the day for exactly that reason, and I'd rather give you an honest 9am than an optimistic 2pm.

Questions

Smart Lock in Encinitas

Everything on the main smart lock page applies here too — same price, same inclusions.

Will it fit my door?

Most standard doors, yes. Text me a photo of the current deadbolt from both sides and I'll confirm before you buy anything. Thick doors and unusual backsets are the two things that catch people out.

What if my door doesn't close properly now?

Then a smart lock will make it worse, not better. I can usually adjust the strike plate as part of the install. If the door itself has dropped or the frame has shifted, I'll tell you what's actually wrong.

Can you install one on a glass or sliding door?

No — those need a different kind of hardware. Standard deadbolt replacements on hinged doors are what I do here.

Smart lock installation in Encinitas

Encinitas has two things working against a smart lock and both are worth knowing before you buy. Salt air gets into the mechanism on any door with an ocean exposure, so a unit rated for coastal conditions is not marketing. And the older Leucadia and Cardiff cottages have doors that have moved considerably over the decades — some are no longer square in any direction. A motorised bolt needs a clean throw, so on those doors the fitting work is the real job. Send a photo of the door closed, taken from inside — the gap along the latch edge tells me most of what I need to know.

Encinitas? Send a photo and I'll confirm $119.

Same flat price as everywhere else I work. If the photo shows something that changes it, you'll know before I drive out.
