Which router should I buy?
Depends on the size and construction of the house, not on the number on the box. Text me the square footage and how many floors and I'll name one.
How is this different from the mesh WiFi job?
This is one router replacing one router. Mesh is multiple units covering a house that a single router can't reach. If you're not sure which you need, describe the dead spots and I'll tell you.
Will I lose my smart home devices?
Not if I keep the same network name and password, which is the default approach. If the name has to change I re-pair the important things before I leave.

New router setup in San Diego is fifteen minutes of configuration and two hours of getting everything back onto the network, and the second part is what people underestimate. A modern household has a doorbell, a thermostat, two printers nobody can find, a garage module, half a dozen speakers and a security camera on the side of the house — and every one of them has to be re-paired if the network name changes. I keep your existing name and password by default so almost nothing has to be touched.
Placement is where the real gain is. Cox and AT&T bring the line into whichever corner of the house was convenient in 1985, and the router ends up in a hall closet behind a water heater. Moving it, or accepting that it has to stay and planning coverage around that, is a bigger factor than the model you bought. I also change the admin password off the factory default and write it down for you, which is a thing almost no home network here has had done.
