Chula Vista specifics

What's different about Garbage Disposal here

Eastlake, Otay Ranch and Rancho del Rey kitchens were built post-1990 with modern ABS drains, a dedicated outlet under the sink, and cabinets sized for a standard disposal. That's the easy version: old unit off, new unit on, run water, check every joint, done in an hour. Many of these homes came with a builder-grade half-horsepower unit that's now at the end of its life, and stepping up to 3/4 horsepower fits fine in the space.

Northwest Chula Vista and Bonita homes are decades older, and there the plumbing has usually been modified piecemeal. Sometimes the disposal is hardwired rather than plugged in, which is still a like-for-like replacement I can do. Sometimes the cabinet is tighter than a modern one. Neither is a problem — they're just reasons a photo under the sink beforehand saves us both a surprise.

Before you book, from Chula Vista

East of the 805 this is usually a clean hour, and if you're replacing the builder-grade half-horsepower unit these homes came with, stepping up to three-quarter horsepower fits the space fine. Clear the cabinet before I arrive and take a photo of what's under there — particularly whether the unit plugs into an outlet or is wired in directly. West of the 805 in the older homes, that photo matters more, because the plumbing has usually been adapted piecemeal over the decades.

Getting to you

The east-side HOAs are active, and several have written rules about anything mounted on a front elevation — cameras and doorbells included. It is worth a five-minute check of your CC&Rs before I come out, because a camera I have to move is a camera I mounted twice.

Questions

Garbage Disposal in Chula Vista

Everything on the main garbage disposal page applies here too — same price, same inclusions.

Is this plumbing work?

It's a fixture replacement on the existing drain connection and existing outlet. No new plumbing runs, no repiping, no permit. If your under-sink plumbing turns out to need actual repair, I'll show you what I'm looking at and refer you to a plumber.

What if there's no outlet under my sink?

Then it's hardwired, and swapping a hardwired unit is still a like-for-like replacement I can do. What I can't do is add an outlet where there isn't one — that's permit work.

Which disposal should I buy?

For most kitchens, 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower is plenty. Text me a photo of what's under there now and I'll tell you what fits the space and the existing plumbing.

Do you take the old one away?

Yes, that's included.

Garbage disposal replacement in Chula Vista

Chula Vista disposals are mostly original builder units in homes now fifteen to twenty-five years old, which is roughly when they start failing. The good news is that the plumbing behind them is modern, consistent and easy to work with, so this is one of the more predictable jobs in the city. The usual decision is size: the builder-grade third-horsepower unit is what jams, and stepping up one size is the difference between replacing this again in five years or not. If you run it daily, the half-horsepower unit is the one worth buying; for occasional use the smaller one is genuinely fine.
