Bressi Ranch, Aviara and La Costa homes have contemporary doors with standard bores, so the mechanical side is quick. Where these plans get interesting is the WiFi: the front door is often the far corner of the house from wherever the router lives, and a smart lock that can't hold a connection is a lock you end up operating with a key anyway. I check signal at the door as part of the install, and if it's marginal I'll say so rather than leaving you to discover it.
Several Carlsbad associations review exterior changes closely. A deadbolt replacement is usually treated as maintenance rather than modification, but a few communities specify hardware finish on street-facing doors — if yours is one of them, choosing a matching finish up front is easier than swapping it later. West of the 5 in the Village, older doors and salt exposure bring the same considerations as coastal La Jolla.

Stand at your front door and check the WiFi signal there before you buy. On the larger Carlsbad plans the front door is often the furthest point from the router, and a smart lock that can't stay connected is a lock you end up carrying a key for anyway — which defeats the purpose. Also check whether your association specifies hardware finish on street-facing doors; matching it up front is easier than swapping it later. Photograph both sides of the existing deadbolt.
Getting to you
Carlsbad HOAs are among the most specific in the county about exterior modifications, and a few require architectural review for anything visible from the street. Cameras under an eave are usually fine; a camera on a front wall sometimes isn't. Check first — it costs you nothing and saves a second trip.

Will it fit my door?
Most standard doors, yes. Text me a photo of the current deadbolt from both sides and I'll confirm before you buy anything. Thick doors and unusual backsets are the two things that catch people out.
What if my door doesn't close properly now?
Then a smart lock will make it worse, not better. I can usually adjust the strike plate as part of the install. If the door itself has dropped or the frame has shifted, I'll tell you what's actually wrong.
Can you install one on a glass or sliding door?
No — those need a different kind of hardware. Standard deadbolt replacements on hinged doors are what I do here.
